The woman is caught in adultery (the man, it seems, simply slips away). They bring her to Jesus in the Temple precincts and test him. Will he be merciful or will he demand the law's price; will he have her stoned to death? To open up their minds and hearts to God, Jesus bends down and writes in the dust; everyone is stilled. And then he offers them the simple possibility; if you know yourself to be perfect, then throw the first stone. Nothing happens until the mob slowly move away and he is left with her.
