Olive trees are fundamental treasures for farmers across the world, especially in the Middle East. They were at the time of Jesus Christ. As Jesus approaches his own death he takes his friends to a familiar place of tranquillity and prayer, the Garden of Gethsemane. There, amidst the shadows of the ancient olive trees, he prays and is arrested. (Mark's Gospel, chapter 14, verses 32 - 42, and parallels)
