Azar Nafisi is an Iranian-born writer, poet and teacher now living in the US. Her words speak into the context of the struggles for Iranian women to enjoy the dignity and freedom they seek. This painting was a response to the wave of protests by women across Iran after the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini. Women took to the streets on 16 September 2022 and carried on their protests into 2023.
