Jesus, helping us to grasp the depth of God's love and longing for all, tells of a son who squanders his inheritance before returning home, broken and ashamed. He's stunned to have his father rush to embrace him; all alienation is overwhelmed by love. Here the story and sadness begin. The son leaves home, family, love behind (see Luke's Gospel, chapter 15, verses 11-32).
