Keeping a lamp alight
Often the image of light shining on in darkness is a way the Bible offers us a glimpse of God. Even when the darkness seems overwhelming, the power of God shines on. Even if we cannot see or know it, God's Spirit is at work amongst us. For me the text that says this more beautifully than any other comes at the beginning of the Gospel of John, in which Jesus is given this context: "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it." (chapter 1, verse 5).
